John Garrett was raised in southern New Mexico by parents who taught him to appreciate things made by hand through their collection of Native American arts and crafts.  He taught for many years at various schools including Scripps College and UCLA.  His artwork is based on the application of textile technologies to various materials – many of them found, salvaged and recycled.  He shows with galleries throughout the United States and his work has been collected by numerous museums. He maintains a studio in Albuquerque, New Mexico, and teaches workshops on creativity and the use of textile constructions to build sculpture.

Experimental Fibre Constructions with Alternative and Recycled Materials

This workshop experiments with different materials and constructions to find new possibilities of expression.  Using wire, we will ply different materials with it to make unique lines that can be used in various ways.  With hardware cloth (a welded wire grid), we will explore ways of embellishment and then manipulation into a three dimensional form.  Participants are urged to bring materials they have been collecting but don’t know how to manipulate into a structure.  This is serious play.
