JAN HOPKINS and BRENDA CRABTREE, USA:“Introductory processes and techniques with Skins”

Jan Hopkins is basketry and sculptural fiber artist, working with “alternative materials” such as fruit, citrus and melon peels, fish skin, peels, pods and leaves.  Jan exhibits in galleries and museums across the country and is in prominent collections both private and public including the Racine Art Museum, Museum of Fine Arts, Boston and the Kamm Teapot Foundation.

Brenda Crabtree is the Aboriginal Program Manager at Emily Carr University of Art + Design and holds a BA and MA in Cultural Anthropology.  She belongs to the Spuzzum Band and has both Nlaka’pamux and Stolo ancestry.  Her current art practice focuses on traditional/contemporary weaving with cedar bark and spruce roots, deer hide drum and rattle making and moose hair tufting.

"Introductory processes and techniques with Skins”

Brenda will introduce you to traditional and contemporary techniques working with processed deer, elk, or moose hide.  Through discussion, demonstration, resource materials and hands-on practice, you will develop technical skills in hide preparation for making drums, containers or rattles. This class does not focus on a specific Aboriginal/Indigenous cultural area or style.  It focuses on the processes and technology for working with rawhide in both traditional and contemporary practices.  It also provides methods for working with hide to produce both functional and/or aesthetic objects.

Jan plans to teach you how to think differently about peels and skins by hunting/gathering from nature, by the way of your local market.  This class will concentrate on pomegranate peels, learning how to process your own materials from fresh fruit and how to dry and store your materials until you are ready to use them.  You will also learn how sew the materials to create small containers.  And finally, how you might incorporate it into your own artwork to create a unique style of your own!
