BEVERLY AYLING-SMITH, UK: CLOTH and MEMORY

Beverly Ayling-Smith has recently completed her practice-based PhD research project examining how cloth can be used as a metaphor for loss and how it can connect with the emotions of the viewer. Beverly has exhibited widely in the UK and internationally and has work in the Whitworth Art Gallery collection in the UK and in collections in the USA. She has also presented her research at international conferences and has had her work published in the UK. There is an article about Beverly’s work in Embroidery magazine (Nov 2016) and an online interview at the World of Threads Festival Artists Interviews (no. 97) Beverly’s work can also be seen at www.beverlyaylingsmith.com

CLOTH and MEMORY

This workshop will explore the ways in which cloth can be used as a holder of memories. Participants will bring their memories and experiences and using metaphor and stitch will create individual work containing their own personal narrative. We will explore techniques such as mending, darning and staining to create layers of meaning which, together with reflection, quiet stitching and thinking, will express and preserve memories of people and times that have passed.

Students will bring letters, photos and personal memories together with fabrics such as old sheets, pillowcases, handkerchiefs, and lace to create pieces which resonate with memory.

Participants with all levels of experience are welcome to come and develop ideas in a supportive atmosphere on a journey through personal memories and cloth.
